Sustainable Production

Bianca Alvarado grew up in the San Diego/ Tijuana border. Bianca Alvarado's background is in working with local communities on environmental issues in the San Diego/ Tijuana border. Seeing the social impact of maquiladoras (assembly lines) in local communities inspired her to get involved with sustainable production and manufacturing.

As a child, seeing her aunt's experience working in a maquialdora (a manufacturing plant that imports and assembles duty-free components for export) in Tijuana, made her aware of how women around the world work very hard yet do not earn a living salary.

                Handcrafted and Fairly Traded

While visiting San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, in 2017, she was reminded again of this injustice. Indigenous women sell their handmade products on the streets for tourists at very low prices while their children beg for food or money.

Growing up in the San Diego/ Tijuana Border Region.

Read her story below!

When I was a child, the immigration status of my mom and two siblings forced us to constantly move between Tijuana and San Diego. For two of these years we crossed the border daily in our blue old van.  Crossing daily at three or four in the morning the Tijuana/ San Diego International Border was one of the greatest challenges that I have experienced. I was eleven years old with a family of nine using the park or a store's parking lot as a home.

The border also separated my family for many years because my dad lived and worked in Santa Barbara and visited us only on the weekend in Tijuana. Growing up along the border was challenging, but today the border is part of my profession and passion.

My background and experience shaped my vision behind Baja Urban, our online store that promotes fair trade, sustainable production, and women empowerment. Shop Now!
