Sustainable Production

                  Sustainability and the Environment

My background in understanding environmental issues and sustainability comes from grassroots work with nonprofits, a fellowship with the National Science Foundation's Art of Science Learning (AoSL), as the binational and community leader for a watershed solution my team developed as part of AoSL (Trash to Paradise), and more recently as the Founder of Baja Urban.

My undergraduate intern experience in 2012 with the Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) as a researcher and community advocate for their border environmental justice campaign allowed me to see the local impact on communities of international economic agreements like NAFTA.

"Finding funding for the project  made me realize that sustainability cannot happen if the economic aspect is not tied to it"

As the binational and community leader of Trash to Paradise (2014-2016), I realized that for sustainability to be possible environmental consideration must go in hand with business and economics. Trash to Paradise's mission was to alleviate pollution in the Tijuana River watershed by re-purposing plastic and tires to create an artificial wetlands system that would safely recycle blackwater into reusable greywater at a community level. Finding funding for the project made me realize that sustainability cannot happen if the economic aspect is not tied to it.

Baja Urban is born in 2016...

Bianca Alvarado founded Baja Urban (BU) in 2016. BU is an ethical social business. By paying women a fair price for their work and partnering with small collectives, we help strengthen communities by ensuring that our products have been sustainably produced.

Baja Urban helps bridge the gap in the artisan industry by producing quality and fashionable products while paying artisans a fair wage.
